SPEAKER PROFILES

Dr. Joaquín Fernández, MD, PhD specialized in Ophthalmology and Anterior Segment Surgery: Refractive Surgery, Presbyopia, Keratoconus, and Cataracts, obtaining his PhD in Physics applied to Sciences and Technology by the University of Alicante (Spain). Nowadays, he is Medical Director at QVision, Ophthalmological Unit of Vithas Hospital Group in Almería. He is also in charge of the Ophthalmological Department at the Torrecárdenas Hospital (Almería) and leads the Keratoconus Department in the East Andalusian, both in the Health Public System. Member of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), he has published in national and international research journals (JRS, JCRS, etc) in addition to his participation in the writing of books related to the speciality. As anterior segment surgeon with a wide experience, he has conducted live surgeries and communications at many national and international ophthalmology congresses.

Dr. Assouline is one of the most acknowledged French experts in refractive surgery of cataract, myopia, presbyopia and keratoconus. He was one of the founders of the Vision Clinic in Paris, in 1998. He has been a pioneer in the field of Lasik (myopia, presbyopia) and keratoconus surgery in France. Dr. Assouline is also one of the international pioneers of ``premium`` implants for cataract surgery. Since 2000, he has been the president of the French association InCLO ``Innovations in Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers”. In 2010 he founded the Centre IénaVision Ophthalmology in Paris. He was the editor of the professional journal ``Ophthalmologies`` until 2010. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Assouline has given more than 400 communications, lectures, or live surgical demonstrations in 54 countries. He has authored or coauthored 5 theses and dissertations, 35 international scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, 150 professional articles and 24 book chapters. Dr Assouline is an expert consultant of Medicontur Medical Engineering Ltd.

Prof. Gábor B. Scharioth graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Humboldt University (Campus Charité), Berlin. He is the co-founder of one of the leading private centers in Germany – Aurelios Augenzentrum Reckling-hausen. His main field of interest is surgical treatment of macular diseases, glaucoma surgery, cataract and refractive surgeries. He is one of the pioneers of deep sclerectomy and canaloplasty surgery for glaucoma. He is the author or co-author of many German and international scientific publications. Actively taking part in many international congresses with a number of video & scientific paper awards, he is a member of many international scientific ophthalmological societies. He is the inventor of “Glaucolight” and of a new Macula Lens. Prof. Scharioth also works as a scientific consultant for companies like Alcon, DORC and Medicontur.

Professor Srinivasan is a consultant corneal surgeon and joint clinical director at the University Hospital in Ayr, Scotland. He completed his Ophthalmology residency in the Aravind Eye Hospital in India, and went for higher surgical training to the St. Paul’s Eye Unit of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, UK. Later he won a two year clinical fellowship in Cornea, External Diseases and Refractive Surgery in the the University of Toronto, Canada. His main fields of professional interest are lamellar corneal surgery, micro incision cataract surgery and anterior segment reconstruction. He has published over 85 papers in peerreviewed journals, has held over 60 scientific presentations at national and international congresses. He is a recipient of the Achievement Award and International Scholar Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In 2012 he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons, and is the associate editor of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Erik L. Mertens, MD, FEBOphth currently serves as the Director and Ophthalmic Surgeon of the Medipolis Eye Center in Belgium. He founded a new multidisciplinary clinic named 'Medipolis Private Antwerp Clinic’ in 2009 (Antwerp, Belgium). Medipolis is the only ophthalmogical center in Belgium which obtained the rigorous KIWA certificate. Dr. Mertens graduated form the University of Antwerp in 1991. He then followed his residency in ophthalmology from 1991-1995 studying refractive surgery, wavefront aberration laser surgery, phakic IOL, cataract surgery, cornea transplant and presbyopia reversal. He graduated from the Kellogg School of Management, Evanston, USA as Physician CEO in October 2015.
Dr. Mertens has utilized his expertise to become a specialist in the fields of refractive surgery as well as small incision cataract surgery. His extensive refractive surgery experience has led him to be the first author in 32 international publications, the author of over 400 abstracts in national and international congresses and make over 600 scientific presentations both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mertens is chief medical editor for the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. He also serves as an International Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Refractive Surgery and ‘World Journal of Ophthalmology’. He is a scientific reviewer for the ‘Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’, the ‘American Journal of Ophthalmology’ and the ‘Journal of Refractive Surgery’. Dr. Mertens is a member of a variety of societies including a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO), a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), and an International Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and co-founder of AECOS (American-European college of Ophthalmic Surgeons) and president AECOS Europe (2019-2021). He is member of ‘Refractive Surgery Alliance. He also performs live surgery at national and international congresses. He is the lead instructor and moderator of several courses on premium IOL and phakic IOL implantation. He performed the first femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Belgium. He was the Principal Investigator in 5 GCP Clinical Trials (one for Acufocus (IC-8 lens in 2015), one for Ophtec in 2016 and one for Medicem in 2016-2017, STAAR Surgical 2018-2019, Allotex 2018-) and a Sub-investigator in five trials.
